Scotland Independence Referendum 2014
EDINBURGH - It was one of the most important votes in British and, certainly Scottish, history. About 4-million people cast ballots in a referendum on independence that would have broken-up the United Kingdom. But in the end the union survived with 55% of Scots voting against separation beating the 45% who wanted to leave. But years of constitutional wrangling now lies ahead since the Westminster parliament in London promised more powers to Scotland if it stayed. Brits should read up on modern Canadian history if they want a sense of how divisive constitutional negotiations can be. They can Google the 'Meech Lake' and 'Charlottetown Accords'.
